The Saga of The Hot Librarian

I had no idea that I was The Hot Librarian.

Jeff was a biology major in college, and he spent most of his waking hours in the library studying with his biology classmates – a group that Jeff likes to call ‘The Nerdlings.’

I was a Literature major and spent many bored hours in the library at the front desk as a student worker. And Jeff and The Nerdlings (band name alert!) apparently referred to me as The Hot Librarian.

At the time, I was an eighteen year old country girl that had just moved to San Diego from the fields of Idaho, and San Diego was filled with blond haired, blue-eyed, tan legged, beach girls that wore bikinis to history class. I wore glasses and read constantly. I loved flannel shirts and the only bikini I ever owned was for my Cabbage Patch doll. I was not, by any means, hot.

Which should tell you one major thing. In order to consider me hot, this group of Bio nerds had spent so much time in the back corners of the dusty shelves that they had calibrated their Hotness Register according to the females that they regularly saw in the library, which now that I think about it would have been the reference librarian, Ms. I-Think-Turtlenecks-Are-All-the-Rage, and the janitor.

Nonetheless, with his gaggle of bio nerdlings whispering in the corner, Jeff would saunter up to the front desk and check out books during my shifts. Big books. Smart books. Books like Systematic Theology and The Dawn of Man. Books that were supposed to cause me to slowly slip off my librarian glasses, look this Bio Hunk up and down, leap across the circulation desk and fall into the arms of my long-awaited science hero.

“Teach me about organic chemistry!” I would plead and he would throw back my hair and kiss me passionately right there in the reference section.

But I never noticed. Not once. In fact, the only time Jeff ever got my attention was the time he asked me two days in a row if he had any books overdue. Which at that point, he became that guy – the annoying dude that didn’t realize that books can be checked out for multiple days in a row.

Swoon.

It wasn’t until a mutual friend introduced us and Jeff finagled his way into a first date with me that our love story actually began. But more on that later…

(To be continued… This is the first part of the story of how Jeff and I fell in love. You can read the entire series here.)

Hugs,
Erin
