The Theory of Having Fun

Its like going to the tide pools for biology class. Or riding a scooter to go get groceries. Or using a kids toothbrush. Or crumping to Black Eyes Peas while vacuuming the living room (did I just say that...?). Its just so much more fun. All of life's mundane tasks become, well, exciting. Call me crazy (it wouldn't be the first time), but I actually look forward to those rare free Saturday afternoons when I drag out my vacuum, tie back my hair, and go all Merry Maid on our house. I pull on my favorite yoga pants, crank up "I've Got a Feeling" on the stereo, strap on my hot pink rubber gloves, and get all "oh no you din-nit!" on our greasy stove. Its simply fantastic.

I love great marketing, and this is definitely great marketing. Volkswagen has started TheFunTheory.com, a website dedicated to the theory that we can change people's behavior for the better simply by making something fun to do. I love that a car company is making videos that have nothing to do with cars, but have everything to do with "better." Who wouldn't feel good about a company or product that is investigating the act of making things "better"? Plus, I just wish that I could have been walking through this subway on this particular day! I would have spent hours running up and down these stairs, hot pink gloves and all, and definitely getting my exercise! Chopsticks anyone?

Hugs,

Erin

Grace - i love this! the trash bin was fantastic as well.

Gareth Robins - I saw this on Twitter a few days ago and couldn’t agree more with you, although I’m not going to admit to dancing around to BEP while cleaning (at least not yet).

Life should be fun, our parents and grandparents had it hard building the foundations for us to enjoy life, but I think too many take that for granted. Everyone has a God given right to be the person they should be and not the one they’re expected to be.

Sorry, but deep, but in New Zealand we’re still reeling from the passing of wee Aisling Symes….

Nigel Hicks - Great post Erin -Love it! Awesome initiative thanks for sharing :)

Shannon - Saw this on this blog (http://www.swiss-miss.com/2009/10/piano-stairs.html) on Friday….such a great concept/idea/project!
