More Images from Nicaragua

Jeff and I arrived home from our week in Nicaragua at 2:00am on Monday morning and didn’t wake up until noon. At about ten in the morning, I woke up bleary-eyed and drooling with Gracie sprawled across my chest, pinning me down with her shocking ability to multiply her body weight to keep me from disturbing her comfy perch. She opened one lazy eye at me and then went back to snoring. I looked over at Jeff and asked, “Wear our pajamas to work day?” He grunted and nodded. And then we fell back asleep. Eventually we pulled ourselves out…

The TOMs Tan Club

I used to be SO PROUD of my flip-flop tan lines on my feet – two white lines cutting through my super dark feet from wearing my Rainbow sandals everyday in the California heat. Those tans lines are the mark of a true San Diegan – always in the sun, never with closed toe shoes. And if you know anything about me by now, my mission in life is to actually fit in and not be that freakishly tall farm chick fearfully scanning the room from her perch in the corner. I’m still working on that… After the first day of wearing…

Strikes, Gridlock, Chickens, and Tacos
Welcome to Nicaragua

Jeff and I landed in the capital of Nicaragua on Tuesday at noon after a sleepless red eye flight to Atlanta on Monday night. Blurry-eyed and hungry, we were greeted by our driver from the non-profit we’re working for with the news that the highway to Matagalpa (our final destination) had been shut down due to worker strikes. “We may or may not get through, but we’ll see.” We ran into the strikers’ roadblock about an hour into the should-be-two-hour drive. A policeman casually pointed to a dirt road off to the left and noted that the detour should only…

We’re Off to Nicaragua PLUS a Giveaway Winner!

I was packing our suitcases yesterday when I suddenly realized that it’s been a year since our last international trip. Over the course of 2010 and 2011, we traveled a ton and got to visit 12 different countries for incredible destination weddings, non-profit shoots, and pure personal fun. We flew 100,000 beautiful miles around the globe to places like Thailand, Cambodia, Italy, Costa Rica, Australia, and beyond. But the last trip we took across borders was to St. Lucia last spring. We’ve been hopping around domestically on a regular basis, but I realized as I was stuffing Jeff’s socks into his favorite pair…

Cumin Rubbed Sweet Potatoes with Sage

As winter slowly fades into spring, we have just a few more warm and hearty dishes to feature here on Recipe Sunday, and this one totally takes the cake for the fanciest potato side dish I’ve ever seen – sweet potatoes rubbed with cumin, baked to crispy, then topped with a lightly fried sage leaf. I feel like the cumin is a little tuxedo jacket and the sage is a fancy tie for this delightful crowd-pleasing side dish that will hold it’s own next any fancy-schmancy steak – or may I suggest a braised short rib pot pie?? We made…

Crying Over Spilled Salt PLUS a Giveaway!

You know how they say you shouldn’t cry over spilled milk? What about spilled salt? ‘Cuz I definitely did. On New Year’s Eve of 2009, I won the cutest salt and pepper shakers from Anthropologie at a bridal shower for one of our brides. At the time, I didn’t have the slightest clue as to how to decorate my kitchen, but these three inch tall ‘S’ and ‘P’ shaped salt and pepper shakers were a lively pattern of red, yellow, orange, blue, and green. When I brought them home and lovingly placed them on my kitchen table, I realized that I…

White Cheddar Onion Pudding

If you’ve been reading Recipe Sunday for any length of time, I’m all about easy deliciousness. The simpler and tastier the dish can be, the more I can convince the world that I’m a kitchen goddess and NOT a fumbling madwoman. Watch out world. She’s got a pepper grinder and is not afraid to overuse it. Crockpots, dutch ovens, flavorful meats, and fresh herbs have become my crucial sidekicks – I just can’t live without them anymore. And this side dish that I uncovered from my stack of Better Homes and Gardens magazines has been proven itself over and over…

Fullness, Togetherness, and Why I Love/Hate Starbucks

Jeff and I live in an area of town that is chock full of entrepreneurs and TONS of stay at home parents. Why does this matter? Oh it matters. Have you ever been to my closest Starbucks? Lemme ‘splain. We moved to our neighborhood three and a half years ago, a month after I left my day job to work on our photography business full-time. The second the movers left, I grabbed my laptop and strutted out the door to go work at our local Starbucks for the very first time. After a year of working in a corporate office…

Love Notes that Stick

I’m a little forgetful. Ok, a LOT forgetful. But only when it comes to sweets. And when I say ‘sweets’, I mean when Jeff says really sweet things about me. One day he’ll tell me that he thinks I’m a wonderful writer and go on and on and on about my entertaining stories, but the next day I’ll be banging my head against the desk moaning that I’m awful at writing and should never have started. I’ve forgotten. I don’t want to admit how many times we’ve had this dialogue: Me: “You never say I’m pretty. When was the last…
