Seriously, being interviewed has got to be the most nerve-wracking experience for me. I was curled up in a ball on our leather recliner, wrapped in my favorite blanket and clutching Gracie while trying not to sound at least somewhat smart after our wonderful friends, Justin and Mary, referred us for the feature. ‘Just talk about our story,’ I kept thinking. ‘The most important thing is our honesty.’ After I got off of the phone, I let out a huge sigh and Gracie shoved her face into mine, annoyed that I had been ignoring her for the past 30 minutes….

Lessons from The Photog Retreat

What I learned on our seven day cruise to the Mexican Riviera while teaching and speaking to a small group of rad photographer on The Photog Retreat: I learned how to navigate a flight of stairs while riding a very large rocking ship on rough winter seas. I also learned that the rough seas can land you at the bottom of the stairs in a restaurant line of old ladies at a moment’s notice. I learned how to pose with an empty picture frame for a couple’s portrait. Well, to be more precise, THROUGH an empty picture frame. I learned…

Mentor Sessions with The Youngrens

I simply cannot express how much fun we had on The Photog Retreat – since there were only 30 of us hanging out on a cruise ship for seven days, there were a whole lot of intimate and candid conversations that happened around lunches, dinners, fourth meals, and midnight snacks (we basically ate our way through the boat for a week. Just ask my bathroom scale). But the best part for Jeff and me was grabbing a cup of coffee and hanging out one on one during our mentor sessions with attendees. We get such a thrill out of hearing…

The Eyes of a Ten Year Old

Remember how Jeff and I just went to our photography conference in Las Vegas? Well, Heather and I got to go to Vegas a few days early without Jeff (he had a shoot commitment in San Diego) and teach kids about photography. Well, it wasn’t so much teaching as it was running after crazy happy kids that were wielding cameras and had insatiable shutter fingers… A couple of times a year, Pictage teams up with Boys and Girls Clubs to put on Lens and Learns – one day programs where professional photographers teach kids about the joys of photography. I’ve…

Gracie Makes Her Music Video Debut

I totally think Gracie is a natural when it comes to this stuff. I mean, I spent a full hour and a half stressing over my hair and makeup while Jeff transformed our garage into the perfect lip-dub music video set, and Gracie just waltzes on in and steals the spotlight. Sheesh. She didn’t even do her hair for Pete’s sake. But people loved her. She totally stole the show. I mean, I don’t think she outdid the fabulous Zach and Jody and Heather and Eugene’s choreographed circle dance or the rockstar moves of Sara France against the San Diego…

We’re Off on The Photog Retreat!

You didn’t think The Youngrens could go THAT long without some travel did you?? After a few months of kickin’ it homebody style, Jeff and I are off on yet another travel adventure. For the next week, we’ll be on a Norwegian Cruise to the Mexican Riviera speaking at The Photog Retreat, a small photography workshop with ten speakers, twenty photographers, and whole lotta sunshine! WOO-to-the-HOO!! If you’re on the cruise with us, feel free to belly up next to the pool with me, slather on some SPF, and soak up some Mexico sun while Jeff hits up the shuffleboard…

I Know What You’re Thinking

At the time of this posting, Jeff and I will be hootin’ and hollerin’ at this year’s WPPI. For those of you that don’t know what WPPI is, it’s an enormous conference in Las Vegas for wedding and portrait photographers. I totally know what you’re thinking right now. You’re thinking, ‘Seriously? They have a conference for everything these days!’ And you’re SO RIGHT. I was googling the other day for writing and blogging conferences, and I found a conference for people who blog about wine and cheese. Which would be the week after the conference for people who blog about…

Internships are Open
Apply to Learn from The Youngrens

You’ll get to learn all kinds of stuff… Nay, you’ll get to witness all kinds of stuff. Like our infinite supply of super-healthy-and-not-gross-whatsoever-spinach-smoothies that our first intern, Jamie, got us hooked on. On your first day, you’ll get to watch Jeff use our high-power blender to grind up whole lemons. And I know you don’t believe me, but it’s the COOLEST THING EVER. You’ll also get to watch me forget to eat until 4:00pm. But I have gotten so much better about changing out of my pajamas now that we have employees. The whole ‘boss’ thing doesn’t go over so…

FAQ: Time to Retreat

The only thing I can say is why didn’t I think of this sooner? It wasn’t until a friend walked into a PUG meeting and said that he and his wife were on Day Two of their first business retreat. It totally knocked me upside the head, and before I could finish my little plastic cup of wine, I had scheduled The Youngrens first business retreat for that very next Tuesday. What can I say? I’m efficient. I’m certain that’s why Jeff married me. So Jeff, Gracie and I sat down with our cups of tea, yellow legal pads, sharpened…
