19 Frames – Vote for your Favorite!

Two weeks ago I blogged about my experience in Malaysia where I happened across a really cool abandoned resort with only 19 frames left on my camera. Instead of deleting some images to make space, or editing my shots in-camera, I decided to pretend like I was on my last roll of film, and challenged myself to shoot the scene in those remaining 19 frames.

It was such a fun exercise for me (an admitted over-shooter) that I thought it would be fun to 1) share my results on our blog and 2) challenge others to try the same exercise. I am THRILLED with the resulting images, and getting the chance to read the descriptions that people wrote to accompany the exercise was super interesting.

Take a few minutes to browse through the variety of submissions (links/descriptions below) and then vote for your favorite set of 19 Frames.

Originally the prize was a $15 iTunes gift card, but secretly, we had other ideas in mind for the winner! We didn't want prizes to be the motivation to do the exercise - we wanted people to do the exercise because they were inspired by it. Sooooo, the winner will get to CHOOSE between:

Zach Hodgson - "Neighborhood"

I realized that very few people outside of close friends in Seattle (even my immediate family) know where I live and what my neighborhood is like. So, I’m double-dipping with this post. I have nineteen frames ready to go that tell the story of my home—1825 E Denny Way—and the block surrounding it. I tried not to stray too far, keeping myself within a one-block radius from home to give you a taste of the world which I inhabit every day.

Damiano Migani - "Salton Sea Ride"

On Sunday I went for a ride to the Salton Sea and on the way back I discovered this abandoned old farm. Light was perfect, no one was around... and I just couldn’t resist.

Mandi @ Red Gecko Studio - "Truck Stop"

Cammie Holterman @ Red Gecko Studio - "Truck Stop"

My new associate shooter & I were on our way back from a photography seminar this evening. We had met up to carpool in DeForest, Wisconsin, right off of the highway at a TA truck stop. As we pulled into the parking lot after a long day of learning, we noticed the abandoned building that lives next to the TA, or lived one day long ago, as a novelty shop… I said to Mom/Cammie, “Aaaw, that would have been a great spot to shoot for this challenge I was going to do…” It took a second for the bright idea to set in. “Let’s shoot it!”

Reuben Poon @ Celebration Packages - "The Condo"

So it took me forever to even get started on this because I kept trying to think of a location or story I could tell. Because I'm lazy, I decided to just tell the story about where I live. To kill another bird, people are always getting lost and confused finding my condo, so I figure I can just point them here from now on:)

Crystal @ Pridmoria Productions = "Home"

I've been thinking about what I could take pictures of, and today it kind of dawned on me:  I can take pictures of home.  Before we got married, Bryan found a foreclosed condo in Mission Valley.  The complex was built in the late 60's, and it kind of looks like it sometimes..... However, the gardens are spectacular!  We live at the bottom of a hill, and the hillside behind the condos is covered with grass, flowers, and critters. We have been renovating our condo for the past year and a half, and I've really fallen in love with this place.  It's our own little corner of the world. The afternoon sun was streaming through the beautiful trees, and I tried to capture the love I have for this tired, but homey, little complex.

Jen Van Wyk - "Abandoned"

I had been keeping my eye out for a scene for a week or so, and was wondering where I was going to go when I happened upon this place last Saturday. I was shooting some photos for one of my groom's bands BOWSER (but more on this later), and they led me to these abandoned buildings in downtown Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin (insert photographer flip out here). I knew it was perfect. Lots of old stuff. Lots of falling apart stuff. Lots of stuff in places that don't make sense.

Garrett Richardson - "Sunset Cliffs"

"What do I have to lose? At least I know it will be a teaching moment for me.” So, I went running down Sunset Cliffs yesterday (ps: the most incredible running spot on the west coast and I walked there from my room on campus) during arguably one of the most perfect San Diego days I’ve seen this year. I have always been keen on this house that sits nestled right off the cliff. It’s such a unique spot so I grabbed my camera and shot with intention and purpose.

Josh Haleen - "Lost Abbey"

Recently, I had the opportunity to go on a tour of the Lost Abbey Brewery in San Marcos, CA.    The brewery/tasting room has the feel of a Latin monastery and likes to play with the idea of saints making and enjoying the Devil's brew.  Aside from serving great beer, this was a working facility with plenty going on to capture my with my camera.  Hopefully I was able to capture the truly unique atmosphere of the place.
