It's great to see that you are educating on the subject. As a Chicago wedding photographer, I also see a need to educate second shooters on etiquette and process. Which is why I am hosting a Second Shooter Seminar.

This seminar has been designed to educate prospective second shooters on how to become professionals in their own right and eventually move on to become primary photographers. The long term goal is to develop a community where primary photographers can seek out individuals ready to invest their time and efforts into learning how to become better photographers through becoming the best second shooter for the primary photographer.

Thanks for all the tips! I've second shot a couple weddings this past year, and looking forward to doing more. It's nice to know what is 'taboo' and what is good.

I'm also loving the second sneak-preview photo!

What an excellent post!!! I love working with other photographers, both as my second shooters and as their second shooters. It really helps you grow as an artist.

Coming up in the business are some photographers that just don't know any better, and educating others on the professional protocol is so important for the industry.

Thank you for this Jeff! I would love to print this out to attach to our second shooter contract if that's ok with you! ~ Annie

ps. this would make an excellent partnercon talk!

Great post Jeff. Being a 2nd photographer is something I've really enjoyed and am always looking for opportunities to do. I love the freedom of being able to seek out the personal details and candid shots. While I generally do everything posted here it was helpful to take a step back and think about WHY I do these things. I've found that when I'm consistently mindful of how to make the life of the primary photographer easier it creates a smooth and fun evening for everyone. Plus they tend to hire me again or refer me. Thanks for the post.
