Fancy Black Vans and Jeff’s Cameo

I just couldn’t resist posting this after our engagement session with Richie and Kathy yesterday in Newport. Me – “Ok guys, stand together holding hands and facing me. I’m just gonna take one last quick shot…” Jeff and his feet slipping into my frame – “Can I be in one too? Pleeeease??” And yes, my dear hubby loves his Vans. He says these are his “fancy black vans” because he got to wear them to Jeff and Kelsey’s wedding at The Hotel Del Coronado, so they are now officially ‘dressy shoes.’ Hugs, Erin

A Desk Full of Photos and a Sneak Peek

We got an email on Wednesday from one of our amazing clients-turned-life-friends – for whom we’ve photographed her two daughter’s weddings (Lizzy and Steph) and her 25th wedding anniversary with her hubby – with a photo attached that said: “Just noticed that all pics on my desk are by The Youngrens!” Aaaaaaand this is what makes our jobs worth every single ounce of blood, sweat, tears, heart, and soul that we put into it. The fact that a mother gets to see the people she loves and the moments she cherishes every single day through beautiful prints. We love walking…

My Life in a Basket

Heather is basically my favorite. This blonde bombshell of a woman interned with us last summer and is now a permanent part of the team here at The Youngrens. While much of her work is remote, she spends plenty of quality time cozying up to Jeff and me here in the office. And she fits in with our craziness perfectly. When Heather is around, the chatter goes through the roof and the laughter is non-stop. In fact, the people shy/neurotic Gracie has even shown her face to Heather a few times. It’s always a good sign when our cat sits…

Sneak Peek: Anthropologie Does Weddings

This is why she’s my best friend – because she knows exactly how to get me to squeal in the middle of a corporate shoot… The lovely and adorable, Shannon, reads the COOLEST fashion blogs around, and she keeps me updated on the best news ever. So thanks to my stylin’ friend, I got a handful of links in my inbox during a short intermission on a the set of a shoot yesterday – some sneak peek images of the new BHLDN wedding line at Anthropologie, being released online on Valentine’s Day. Many thanks to Joanna for sharing these fantastic…

Be Inspired
Science Themed Wedding Invitations

If quirky had an avatar, it would be Eric and Cindy. Eric and Cindy are both scientists by trade and their quirky, science-themed summer wedding at The North Chapel in Point Loma and the Marine Room Restaurant in La Jolla captured their lovable personalities perfectly. Everything from the place cards to the dinner that was served reflected a part of their lives – their affection for their adorable kittens, their self-proclaimed “science nerd” relationship, and their love for great food and remarkable experience. When it comes to weddings, the entire theme, style, and experience of the wedding day begins with…

She’ll be at the Mall. Trust Me.

Brides, lovers, fellow Anthro-addicts – the day has finally come. I thought it would never happen. But I woke up this morning to an email that read…. “What if Anthropologie did Weddings?” Shuuuuuuuuut up!! It’s brilliant. Sheer genius. I want to kiss whoever does the email marketing over at Anthropologie headquarters/heaven (sorry sweetie). Maybe that way I can glean just a little bit of the pure magic that rolls out of their heads with every single advertisement that I receive from them. I mean, their brains must be made of fluffy puppies and cotton candy, because I get warm fuzzies…

Anthropologie Inspired Winter Wedding

If you’re looking for a soft, touchable, DIY look for your wedding, then this, my friends, will get your inspiration wheels moving. Tim and Quinn are our lovely couple out of Boise, Idaho, and Quinn and her mother, Terri, were the fabulous minds behind this New Year’s Day winter wedding. When they say that talent for design runs in the family, these two prove that point. Quinn and her mother did everything for this wedding, including all of the flowers, and Quinn got ready at her parent’s gorgeous estate in Boise. Quinn also managed an Anthropologie store, so she took…

Warning: Sock Hazard
Day Eleven Holiday Giveaway

The other day I totally ate it coming down the stairs to answer the door for one of our 2010 brides. I was so excited to see her that I ran out of the office while wearing my favorite pair of warm, fuzzy Christmas socks, and I turned way too fast down the staircase, slipped on our hardwood floors, skid down three steps, and landed flat on my butt with the corner of a step landing right where I had very little flesh covering my bones. It hurt. A lot. And the noise sounded like a semi had just side-swiped…

Cute and Unique
Day Eight Holiday Giveaway

I am so excited to share today’s giveaway with everyone. I came across the lovely Paula and her adorable handmade creations at CuteandUnique.com through Chris and Dena’s DIY wedding back in September. Dena fell in love with Paula’s style and used her flower accents, custom clutches, and fabric boutonnieres for her entire bridal party, including the most adorable of flower girls. I also loved that Dena had custom clutches made for each of her bridesmaids, which is one of the best bridesmaid gifts I’ve seen in a long time. Paula’s shop has tons of goodies to check out for gifts…

Today is Day Seven of our Twelve Days of Christmas here at Casa de Youngren, and I just spent that last 30 minutes reading everyone’s comments from our This American Life giveaway. Whenever I am unsure, or unsteady I am able to do what I need to do with confidence because I know that no matter the outcome my family and friends will push me onto the next task…

Storytellers
Day Six Holiday Giveaway

I get asked quite often how I always find something unique and creative to write about when we feature our couples here on the blog. And if a photographer is asking the question, it’s usually asked out of frustration. “You always have such amazing couples. Mine are SO DULL.” “What am I supposed to do? You’re couples are always hot and stylish. Mine are boring and unattractive.” “How am I supposed to find story? My couples have no story.” My answer? Stop making excuses and start asking questions. Every single person has a unique story that makes them who they…

With a Side of Inspiration

Peak wedding season has just finished for us Youngrens, and we are moving into the time of year when Jeff and I get to do three things: plan holiday parties, eat holiday food, and dream. In fact, I like to call November to February ‘Living the Dream’ months. Last year, we spent January and February living in Singapore and traveling around Southeast Asia (that was literally living the dream), and then we spent the rest of 2010 traveling the country and the globe. Since we did so much traveling last year (ten countries in 9 months), we decided to stay…

Shaping Up

Let’s begin here. With lactose intolerance. Oh bloggy blog it hasn’t been easy being lactose intolerant. When we finally realized a year ago why my stomach hated me so much, I had to give up milk which is – literally – my most favorite food in the whole world. Well, to be honest, milk creates my two favorite foods in the whole world: cereal and ice cream. I tried the other stuff like rice milk, almond milk, and soy, but it just wasn’t the same. It’s the taste of straight up cow milk that I enjoy so much. And even…

Limelight: Ridge Wines

If you know Erin and I, you know that we’ve got a long list of things we love, but at the top of that list is wine. For a long time, my favorite varietal has been Zinfandel, and my hands-down-absolute-favorite vineyard is Ridge. These people simply get wine, and they craft some of the best zins around. I take that back. They craft THE best zins around. When we were up in San Jose earlier this summer for Keith & Janine’s wedding, we had the chance to visit their Montebello property just outside of Cupertino, and it was striking to…

Limelight: The UNexperts

They’re cute, they’re fun, they’re fabulous. And they’re for reals. When it comes to blogging about style and fashion, a writer could easily hide behind the internet’s wonderful and scandalous veil of anonymity. What do I mean by that? Basically, we could all be taking fashion advice from a nun and never know it. But when it comes to the Villa sisters, we’ve got the real deal peeps. How do I know? Let’s explore that for a second… Meet Stephanie Villa. Again. Jeff and I met the wonderful Steph and Sean almost two years ago, and these two have never…

Limelight: Operation NICE

I absolutely love the blog world. If there was such a thing as “time” in my life, I think I would spend most of it reading all of the crazy cool creative blogging that is going on out there – but unfortunately I’ve barely scratched the surface with my Google Reader! So in order to even have a prayer of keeping up with my blogging peeps, I have a short list of favorite blogs that I keep up with regularly. A few of these blogs have made it onto our bloggy-blog before, but in my constant need to connect cool…

TED Talk – David Griffin on photography

I found this TED Talk with David Griffin, photo director of National Geographic, on the Pictage blog the other day. I love it. I love the photography, the stories, the insight, and the leopard seals. I love that stories are what I do for a living. I love that photographs connect us to cultures, to history, to moments, to memories, and most importantly, to each other. I love that this is my passion. And I love that I get to share it with all of you. But I especially love the leopard seals. Hugs, Erin

Twelve Prints

Monday, October 19th, 2009. San Diego, CA. 3:22am. I realized that I forgot to blog. I wish I could say that I was hit with a sudden bolt of panic, immediately sat up in bed, threw Gracie off my legs, and frantically stumbled to our office screeching, “Nooooooo!!! I forgot about Recipe Suuundaaaaaay!!!” But I didn’t. I lay there in my tangle of sheets, wide-eyed, exhausted, and yes, panicked. That whole screaming and yelling scenario definitely floated through my head, you know, the way you think you’re getting ready in the morning but it turns out you were just dreaming…

We love our couples

Its totally enough that this is our job. We are completely satisfied – no, overwhelmingly blessed – that we got to be photographers when we grew up. We don’t need much, we don’t need a huge house or big fancy cars or exotic vacations. If all we did every day was take pictures of weddings, we would be overjoyed. But then our couples come into the picture. When you’re a Youngren bride and groom, you will be spoiled. You will be loved and pampered and laughed to death. And if all we did every day was pamper our couples, we…

Vowell, Gilbert, and Wroblewski

I’m sure that many of you are simply dying to know my progress on my 2009 Reading List – ok I’m sure most of you forgot completely about my little reading series, so that’s why I’m writing about it now. To remind you. And also because I am one of those glasses wearing little girls that curls up in bed at night to immerse herself in the latest literary saga and wants to tell everyone in the world about how mindblowingly amazing it was the next day. Normal people would do this with Lost or So You Think You Can…

Ole! and TED Talks

Very common dialogue between Jeff and I: Jeff: “Hey Erin, have you heard of this new [insert some form of technology/idea/book/Apple product here].” Erin: “No.” In marketing, there are the groups of people known as the Innovators and the Early Adopters. I am not one of them. I am the one that never had a pager in junior high and I barely knew how to work my cd player. We never had cable, much less DVR, and I didn’t get a cell phone until college and that was for emergencies only. In fact, with most everything I was always a…
