19 Frames – Vote for your Favorite!

Two weeks ago I blogged about my experience in Malaysia where I happened across a really cool abandoned resort with only 19 frames left on my camera. Instead of deleting some images to make space, or editing my shots in-camera, I decided to pretend like I was on my last roll of film, and challenged myself to shoot the scene in those remaining 19 frames. It was such a fun exercise for me (an admitted over-shooter) that I thought it would be fun to 1) share my results on our blog and 2) challenge others to try the same exercise….

Recipe Sunday | Pad Thai

I had never eaten Thai food before I went to Thailand, and I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t know if the flavors were spicy or cheesy or if they used noodles or rice or pasta or tortillas. Really, its completely sad how little I knew. I had heard about this thing called “pad thai” running around the airwaves before we left, but had no idea what it involved. Not being a fan of seafood, I was actually pretty nervous that Pad Thai centered around fish and shrimp, or other unrecognizable things with eyes and heads on them….

FAQ: Traveling with (Nice) Cameras

It’s no secret – Jeff and I have nice cameras. And nice lenses. It’s kind of a requirement in our profession. It’s also no secret that we like to travel and have been traveling quite a bit lately. In fact, if you were to ask us to list our hobbies, we would list drinking good wine, eating good food, wearing Rainbow Sandals (yes, its a hobby), and dragging our cameras through the back alleys of the world. And lastly, it’s definitely no secret that we look like complete tourists when we travel. Why? Well, we’re tall, white, brown-haired Americans, and…

More from Tioman Island, Malaysia

A few weeks ago we posted some images from one of the most relaxing spots we visited in Asia – Japamala Resort on Tioman Island in Malaysia. Well, in case you didn’t get enough goodness the first time around, and in honor of the fact that we’re lazing on another beach in Costa Rica as you read this – we’ve cooked up some fresh goodies for your viewing pleasure! The beaches on Tioman were pristine. As in I-can’t-believe-this-place-is-real-and-oh-did-you-see-that-rad-palm-tree kind of pristine. Amazing. At the end of the jetty was one of my favorite spots – it was so relaxing to…

Images from Siem Reap, Cambodia

It’s the first question that everyone asks, and rightly so. What was our favorite place on our trip to Southeast Asia? It’s also a tough question to answer, and rightly so. We pet tigers, we rode elephants, we jumped through waterfalls, and we hiked through forests. We walked through killing fields and crawled through war tunnels. We heard stories. We felt stories. We saw stories. What was our favorite place in Southeast Asia? I think it might have been here: Siem Reap, Cambodia. Its the home of the Angkor temples and the infamous Angkor Wat. It was the capital of…

Recipe Sunday | Khmer Spring Rolls

Its BAAAAA-AAAACK! After a *brief* hiatus, Recipe Sunday is back in full swing here on the bloggy blog, and I’ve got such a crazy assortment of recipes in the bag. You may have heard through Twitter and Facebook that Jeff and I took cooking classes on our trips to Cambodia and Thailand, and the rumor is true… we totally did. And we cooked the beans out of those classes. And we photographed the beans out of them too! I think our cooking teachers will forever know us as “the Americans with the huge cameras that kept burning things.” We took…

Lovers of Fried Chicken

We’re back. If you follow us on Twitter or Facebook, you already know it – The Youngrens are stateside once again. Jeff and I landed in LAX on Wednesday, which means we’ve been home for a couple of days now. This is the point in our trip where we do two things: (1) analyze just how well our bodies are doing with jetlag (“So am I tired because I’m bored, or because its 3:00am in Singapore?”) and (2) reminisce about everything we miss in Asia. For example, Jeff and I were driving to an engagement session yesterday (yup, we’re already…

Jumping In

Right now I’m sitting at the little desk in our hotel room in Kuala Lumpur. Jeff is catnapping in the other room. I’m wrapped up in a robe, with my feet tucked inside those cushy white hotel sandals that you find in the closets wrapped in plastic. Its twilight outside. I am writing because I want to document this, right now, and put it inside our mental scrapbook. It’s cheesy, I know. It’s like shaping my fingers into a rectangle in front of my face and exclaiming “Click!” as I pantomime taking a picture of a dinner conversation. While winking….
