Dreaming in the Daylight

“All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.”
-T. E. Lawrence

Jeff and I were at dinner with one of our couples after their engagement session a few nights ago, and we began talking about our friends that moved to Paso Robles to fulfill their dream of becoming goat and sheep farmers.

We remarked how inspiring it is for us to see two people living out their dream – in the daylight. It’s so rare to witness sometimes. Our groom looked at us and said, “Well, isn’t that what you guys are doing?”

I laughed, and replied, “Yes, we totally are. I just have so many more dreams in the dark recesses of my head, that I sometimes forget to truly appreciate the ones we get to live out in the day to day.”

The quote above by T.E. Lawrence so perfectly describes the tension that exists in dreaming. It is comfortable and safe to dream at night. It’s pleasant and easy. A dream can survive for as long as you want it to when it exists in the darkness. But when the morning arrives, it brings with it a deep disappointment that those dreams are not reality.

Dreaming in the daylight, however, is wrought with challenges. All of the flaws and misgivings and vulnerabilities of a dream are exposed in the raw, harsh light of the day. It’s frightening – and intimidating. But then again, dreams are like diamonds – all of the beautiful details are only allowed to sparkle when exposed to sunbeams.

This quote reminds me of how important it is to dream in the daylight. It is not for the faint of heart, but I am deeply blessed that my heart is not alone. Jeff is there to dream with me, and I am there to dream with him. Two hearts that can live in our dreams together – whether they be present or still to come.

Hugs,
Erin
