“You don’t have to feel like you 100% can do this, try doing it anyway. And so many times you’ll prove yourself right.”
In this sense, I am NOT a Sheryl Sandberg.
I have never been the kind of person to ‘just do it.’
That is terrifying to me. ABSOLUTELY FRIGHTENING.
Three years ago, Jeff said that I should start a podcast. That it would be so much fun and a fabulous way to connect with our audience.
So I took a look at the workflow and I thought about it… And then I thought about it some more…
I wondered what kind of podcast I should record. How long it should be and what kind of content. And then there was the name to consider and the intro music and the thumbnail cover image and the launch strategy … and I got overwhelmed.
It was all too much to think about, and I had many other things that needed attention in my business.
I decided that I would start once I had it all figured out.
As we all know, that day never comes.
Robert Kiyosaki has said:
“If you are the kind of person who is waiting for the ‘right’ thing to happen, you might wait for a long time. It’s like waiting for all of the traffic lights to be green for five miles before starting the trip.”
Isn’t this what we do in our business so often?
We think everything has to be dialed in. We want to see a clear runway of green lights before we raise our prices or launch our new website or go after our Dreamies.
And who can blame us?
Everyone around us is telling us how we should do everything in our business. That we should have this figured out and that dialed in and that we need to avoid all of these certain mistakes.
But what nobody is telling you is that NONE of us knew what we were doing when we started any of our businesses.
We just got started, and we figured it out along the way.
Don’t get me wrong – the wealth of photography education that is available on the internet today is AMAZING. It’s powerful and it’s valuable.
But you won’t benefit from all of those amazing resources unless you are willing to do something with it.
I am not intuitively a Sheryl Sandberg-type person, but in order to take action on the things that I really want to do, I am learning how to act like one in my business.
So guess what??
This summer, I am finally launching my podcast. (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(That’s my internal freaking out that I am actually sending this idea out into the internet-sphere where I can’t take it back and it will become for reals.)
I definitely DON’T have everything figured out for this podcast, but you can bet that I’m going to figure it out.
So let this be my encouragement for you (and for MYSELF):
Don’t feel like you have to have everything perfect in order to start doing what you really want to do. Just start. Start moving. Start pushing. Start launching.
Because you can’t begin to grow your business until your business is actually… born.
Jeff and I have survived thus far, and so will you. The difference is that Jeff and I have your back.
We will be there for you, helping you on your journey as you start DOING.
P.S. We’re all chatting about the things we want to START DOING over in our TY Photographer Facebook Group, so join in! Take it from me – there’s something very special about a positive community that is there to cheer you on!
